Because the bank is our local community bank – their folks work here and live here – they can understand that a new playground at Greene’s Field would be a wonderful asset for our community. In addition to their generous donation, Needham Bank has offered us a challenge to help us meet our goal: For every Greene’s Field Playground supporter who doesn’t currently have a checking account at Needham Bank and who chooses to open one, the Bank will donate $100 to the Greene’s Field Playground. Just mention this offer when you open your account.

Eric Morse, VP at Needham Bank, explained, “We know that people don’t change banks every day, but for supporters of the Greene’s Field Playground who are considering doing so in 2013, we hope you’ll consider Needham Bank. With branches in Needham, Wellesley, Dedham, Westwood and Medfield it’s a great way to show your support of the Greene’s Field Playground. If you’d rather not come into one of our branches, we’ll come to your office or home. It’s so easy to participate in this program. Please contact Jeff Stewart, Needham Branch Manager, to schedule an appointment.”

The Greene’s Field Playground Fundraising Committee would like to say a heartfelt “thank you” to the Kyle W. Shapiro Foundation and its trustees, Ruth Bonsignore and Andy Shapiro. The foundation’s generous donation of $50,000 toward the construction of a new playground at Greene’s Field will ensure that generations of children have a place in the center of Needham to climb, play, slide, and swing.
Because of donations like the one from the Kyle W. Shapiro Foundation, the new Greene’s Field playground is sure to become a destination for families, a meeting place for neighbors and friends, and a place where childhood memories are made. When the new Greene’s Field playground opens this summer, it will have two structures – a smaller one for younger children and a more challenging one for older children. And since the town is planning to renovate Greene’s Field at the same time, the playground will be part of a revitalized park.
The kindness and generosity of our community is part of what makes Needham such an outstanding place to live and to raise a family. Thank you to the Kyle W. Shapiro Foundation for making Greene’s Field a wonderful place to play for decades to come.

Needham, MA – Needham residents and businesses have a chance to mark the 100th anniversary of Greene’s Field by buying a board on what will be a highlight of the new Greene’s Field playground – the Community Boardwalk. Each four-foot wide board can be engraved with a personal message and when the playground is constructed, the boards will be joined together to form a unique boardwalk. It is a perfect way for families, kids, teams, troops and businesses to leave a lasting impression on Needham. Proceeds from the board sale will benefit the playground construction fund. Boards can be purchased online at www.greenesfield.org.
Greene’s Field has a long history of being used for youth recreation. The Town of Needham purchased three parcels of land for $12,000 from Mildred Greene in May of 1912. When the Needham High School was located at the Emery Grover building, the football team held their practices at Greene’s Field. In the more recent past, Greene’s Field has become a center of youth sports, a meeting place for young families, and treasured open space.
“As we come to the end of the 100th anniversary year of Greene’s Field, we have set a goal of selling 100 boards in 100 days to support the playground,” said Alison Borrelli, chair of the Greene’s Field Fundraising Committee. “Similar to a ‘buy a brick program’ residents and businesses have the unique opportunity to leave a lasting impression on the boardwalk. Please take a minute to view the photos of the boardwalk on our website, www.greenesfield.org, it will truly be a highlight of the park.”
The new Greene’s Field playground will replace the one that was deemed unsafe and torn down in 2010. Two structures will be built — one for younger children and a more challenging one for older children. The playground project is part of a larger revitalization of Greene’s Field. The overall project includes planting new grass for the playing fields, renovating the basketball court, constructing a relaxing walking path and gazebo and installing beautiful landscaping. The Greene’s Field Playground is generously sponsored by the Kyle W. Shapiro Foundation. For more information, please visit www.greenesfield.org.
